Supplementary Call for Panels

Celebrating and exploring the intellectual strength, diversity, and creativity of English language, literature, and creative writing in the UK and across the world

Following the success of the first English: Shared Futures conference in Newcastle in 2017 and the postponement of the event in 2020, we’re pleased to announce English: Shared Futures will return with an in-person event 8^th-9^th July 2022.

 

We’re delighted that many panelists from 2020 are still able to attend, but we’re keen to invite more colleagues to participate via this supplementary call for panels.

 

As before, we’re looking for panels on all areas and periods of English literary studies, language studies and creative writing. Approaches may cover:

• new research from any area of the discipline, including practice-based research;
• learning, teaching and pedagogy;
• aspects of professionalization (including responses to covid, precarity, mental health, employability, recruitment, gender and BAME imbalance).

 

We especially welcome panels that bring together colleagues from language, literature and creative writing and/or unite colleagues from Higher, Further and secondary education and/or mix colleagues from different career stages.

 

English: Shared Futures

English: Shared Futures promotes inclusivity and diversity. We encourage representation and participation from under-represented groups, and are proactively working to reduce physical, social, and economic barriers to participation. Our aim is to develop an environment rooted in equal respect for all.

 

In addition to the conventional three-papers-in-a-panel, we’re also keen explore alternative forms of scholarly engagement, such as shared readings; pop-up workshops; zine-making; staged conversations; master-classes; salons; roundtables; interviews; dialogues; ‘research in progress’ sessions; ‘in situ’ events around Manchester; and any other new and rigorous scholarly approaches you may want to propose.

 

ESF2022 will host:

• plenary speakers and many panels on new research, pedagogy and other professional issues
• a joint discussion between Secondary, Higher and Initial teacher education colleagues about the challenges facing the discipline
• a teacher’s strand on Saturday 9^th featuring a NATE-run series of CPD seminars for teachers;
• the return of the very popular mentoring scheme;
• a Heads of Department Networking event;
• Panels from learned societies
• a research Networking mixer;
• a REF feedback session;
• a session from the journal English;
• a session on sharing good admissions and outreach practice;
• Literary Salons;
• numerous readings by poets and others;
• our cultural fringe, funded by Arts Council England;
• We are planning to invite a full range of academic publishers and funding bodies

 

Submitting a proposal

Each session will last 70 minutes. Your application must include the name, status, and institution (if any) of each speaker, and a brief description of the panel session’s focus and objectives. It must not exceed 500 words.

 

We are sorry, we are not able to accept individual papers, only panel sessions. Please feel free to use the twitter handle @EngSharedFuture to find potential partners for panels.
